I was just wondering what kind of food do recruits at Great Lakes and Parris Island/San Diego get to eat while at Boot Camp. I also am curious about that for students at the Naval Academy and Navy/Marine Corps OCS as well.

They have nutritious, balanced meals. Breakfast is generally eggs to order, bacon or sausage, grits (farina) or oatmeal, toast, juices (orange always, then another like apple or grape), and milk and coffee (a military staple). Lunch and dinner varies, but again is healthy and nutritious, with an entree, soup, salad, bread, and desserts (at least jello) is available at both. Contrary to what may be rumored, there is no saltpeter, ground glass or any other such in the food.
I doubt its top notch
I heard bad and unhealthy food but I’ve never served so I don’t know.
The food is good. Lots of choices.
My son recently finished boot camp in San Diego and said the food was "not too bad" – usually they did not have time to savor it – just wolf it down and get out. He said the food especially the salad bar at Camp Pendleton was amazing (and he doesn’t like salad). From what I’ve heard the food at chow halls has definitely improved and more attention is paid to balanced nutrition and palatability. Just don’t be looking for 2" thick medium rare prime steak. Most recruits really don’t care that much as they are generally starved like wolves – pretty much anything would be OK.
You will eat what they give you, you will not talk while you eat it and you will eat it quickly.
When you are hungry it really doesn’t matter what it is. But, it isn’t bad. You don’t have time to dwell on the taste. At least at Parris Island. I don’t know bout the Navy’s chow.
Eggs to order, three choices of lunch to choose from and the dinner is to die for.
Nowadays the army at least provides some very good quality and nutritiouse food, and in good variety. its probably different from base to base. The navy also has good food cause the cooks there are all studying in the culinary arts so they are like 4 star chefs.
It’s pretty nutritious and well balanced but it’s a lot like cafeteria food. My husband hates galley food. But some people go crazy for it. But for the most part they serve the same type of stuff they serve in school cafeterias.
Well, I can only speak for the Marine Corps food from 30 years ago. It was great except for the soup. They used left over food for their soups and added noodles but they always over cooked the noodles.
don’t expect anything from a five star restaurant!
Midshipmen at the Naval Academy eat pretty well. It is always a nutritious and well balanced meal. They have several nutritionists on hand to ensure that. Some meals are better than others obviously, but overall they eat pretty well.
In MCRD San Diego you usually get powdered eggs every breakfast with strips of bacon and a hashbrown. for lunch you usually get some kinda of chicken or fish…it depends on your drill instructors if you get gatoraid, my platoon only got to drink water…the food was OK, we only had about 2-3 min. to shove it down our throats though, so you dont really get to enjoy it.
It is what u make it!!!

My husband loved the food on Parris Island. He said it was the best part. They got tons of options and it was all pretty tasty, even though none of it was seasoned.
