In case you didn’t know, sand fleas are not fleas. They are biting gnats. No bigger than a grain of sand with "teeth" like a pit bull. You might think "so what?" Well, the catch at PI is that when you are standing in formation, the DI’s are not going to let you do anything about them. You have to stand absolutely still while the sand fleas get to chew on your flesh until they aren’t hungry anymore and there is never a time when they are not hungry. I especially liked it when they crawled into my ears and nose. Believe me, you can just about lose your mind. The mosquitoes were about the biggest that I’ve ever seen too. You should only go to Parris Island in the winter time. There will still be bugs but not as many.

You may think you have a bug problem, but really, you’ve only seen the tip of the iceberg.

I remember during my final drill walking outside. It looked like there was a TON of pollen and dust int he air that morning as the sun was shining off of it. Well, when it started landing on me, turned out it was sand fleas. Just billions and billions of sand fleas. This is ignoring the mosquitoes and other insects. Remember, it is in the middle of a swamp.
