Our heavy hitter was fired on T-2 for excessive cruelty (he was caught out by our Series Commander) and my platoon went through most of boot camp down one DI. We didn’t get a replacement until the beginning of Third Phase and he was a senior SSgt they threw in to help complete our training. He was nowhere near as mean as the heavy hitter we lost, but I think that they do serve a purpose. However, my platoon did the best on the Battalion Commander’s inspection prior to graduation because we weren’t as stressed during the initial phases (though we didn’t have it easy, by any means) and could learn more and at a faster rate because of it.

Sgt. Titzer, kudos to you and your choke holds, wherever you are.

I found that the older, more educated enlistees were more apt to question authority in Basic.
On the battlefield, you need an infantryman to rush the enemy, not ponder whether it is more accurate to calculate distances with the Pythagorean theorem, than to use the compass.

LOL! "Mentor D.l." That’s a hoot! I think that the words "mentor approach" and "fighting man" don’t even belong in the same sentence. Have you ever been in a fight? Did you want your mentor there to show you to do it? Especially, a fight for your life? As a former Marine, I appreciated the discipline, physicall training, and stressful situations that my D.I.’s put me through once I was on the field. From your question I wonder if you ever made into active duty, much less action?

I think when your Lt. or Sgt. tells the mentored man to charge an enemy position the soldier is much more likely to say, "WTF???" rather than do as he’s told.
