Come now, my Marine reservist neighbor has been out of his MOS school for almost a year now and his unit has not been activated as of yet. So i think you can relax for now, my son who is also AF has not deployed yet and he got out of tech school in April of 08.
After 911, in September, I was told in October I was being deployed. I was on a plane to kuwaite in November, and I would have been overseas sooner had their been a plane to transport us sooner.

I have seen you ask questions before about the USMC. Are you sure you’re the "dad"? Or are you the person who is enlisted and is acting like the dad?

You used the same "cliffs" gag in your other question and you were not the dad then.

Hard to believe you and your dad use the same "cliffs" gag and hard to believe your alleged son lets his dad use his yahoo account.

I don’t think we will have all troops out of Afghanistan within 18 months, honestly. There will still be some troops in both Iraq and Afghanistan, and in nearby Kuwait, for years to come, even if there are reductions.

Your son could very well see some time in Afghanistan. Obama will not have all the troops he wants there until May. I think that THAT is where the 18 months starts. And he may change plans as time goes by: at one point he said he would have most troops out of Iraq within 18 months of taking office. It looks like it’s going to take a bit longer than that.

When you join the military there is always the chance that you will see combat. As far as when it will happen it depends on what your MOS is and how many schools you have to attend after BC graduation. Will he go directly to Afghanistan? No on really knows that answer. There will probably be a mixture of Marines and Army that will be going. I am sorry I don’t have a crystal ball.
