You can either get meritorious promoted for giving it your all being a squad leader or if you tried to recruit someone before you went off to bootcamp and that person sign a contract while you were in boot camp they’d promote you for that too… which is dumb & the only time that’ll ever happen.
Note to Rekon- actually my husband is a SGT by his 3 yr 2 month mark, while he was going through EOD… so its doable!
Give 100% all the time and don’t give up and show 100% motivation all the time.
NOTE TO COLIN…you possibly don’t think many people will believe that YOU are a Sergeant with only 4-years of service in the Marines? How did you achieve that!? Did you blow the Colonel, pound his colon, Colin? Or win two promotion boards within a two-month period?
There is only about 2% or less, of Marines that made rank that damn quick! We don’t get promoted as quick as the Army. I am a stellar Marine and became a Corporal a lot sooner than most Lance Coolies, I was a Cpl 3-years of service because of meritorious promotion. And it takes about 3-4 years more to become Sergeant from being a Corporal.
They make Honor Graduate by being the platoon guide, squad leader, or any other reason determined by the senior drill instructor. Also, some people who have ROTC experience are guaranteed E-2 upon successful completion of basic training.
You can get that by recruiting 2 other people before you graduate, or by being selected for meritorious promotion by your DIs. In each platoon the DIs can pick a few recruits who have shown to be outstanding in some way, and have them promoted. Having the highest PFT,or rifle score, being a squad leader or being the most improved are often things the promote for. The Platoon and company honorman usually get promoted to Lcpl as well. I think if you have 15 college credits you can get promoted, and Eagle Scouts can get it as well.
Added: Yes I made Sgt. in 4 years and one month as an 0311(I extended 3 months past my 4 year mark). It took me 3 years to make Cpl. I started as a Pvt and never got a meritorious promotion. A lot of guys in my unit got promoted well before me, I was certainly not the best in the unit. That is just how it worked out with the cutting scores, sometimes they are high and sometimes they are low. A lot of my peers were Sgts by there 4 year mark.
