    Sock bun:
Get a sock the color of your hair and cut off the foot part. Roll up the tube into a donut. Put your hair in a ponytail and slip the donut over the ponytail. Flip your head over and spread the ponytail hair out over the sock so it is all covered up. Slip another hair band over the sock so it stays in place. Twist the ends up and secure them so that nothing is sticking out anywhere. You can use a hair band or bobby pins. You aren’t allowed to use clips or barrettes or anything but a lot of gel and hair-colored bands. Lots. Lots of gel.

Regular hair that people use in the real Marine Corps:
Gel your hair back in a ponytail. Secure it with a band and then twist your hair until it curls in on itself and wrap around the stump of your ponytail. Secure that with another hair band and you’re set. Once again, lots of gel: at least a level 10.

I cut my hair in boot camp. It was so much easier, and what they don’t tell you is that your hair is up in that bun 23 hours a day. You only take it down when you shower and wash it but then you have to put it back up again when you go to bed. There is no negotiating this either. If your hair is short you will be able to schedule haircuts on Sundays to keep it above your collar. It is SO WORTH IT.

I heard that there’s this thing made out of socks (or maybe it is shaped like a sock, I don’t remember) that you tie your hair up with.
With all the excercise female recruits are going to do during boot camp, I’m not sure it’s possible to get it up good enough.
I plan on cutting my hair short before I go…

A smart girl will cut it! You can always re-grow it later. This way you don’t have to worry about it and it will be one less thing to worry about.

During your time at PI, or San Diego, you’ll be able like literally 10 secs to put your hair up in a bun. You can actually use various hair gel but NO hairspray. Must be tight enough to stay throughout your days training, cause you’re not given time to fix it, lol, if you try you’ll probably be quarterdecked, or put in the sand pit….

So what are very quick ways to put your hair up in a bun? I know the sock trick because one of the colourguard from the highschool marching band I was in had to put their hair up like that and they taught me how. I was wondering if there is a much quicker way to put it up.

Your best bet is to cut it. I went through bootcamp & having you hair pulled back all the time will cause sores at your hairline. To be honest there is no quick & easy way to pull your hair up in bootcamp. During your free time not long before you hit the rack try to perfect it so that no small hairs are visible otherwise you will get IT’d for it. Plus you will only get maybe 2 days a week that you even get to wash your hair in the shower time & that all accounts if your Senior Drill Instructor feels as tho the platoon deserves it!

Do you have to cut your hair? As of right now my hair is 6 inches below my collarbone and I do not want to whack it off.

Hmmmmm… Cutting your hair may seem like a good option if you have straight hair and don’t have to worry about frizzy hair or curly hair. I have curly hair and there is no way I’m cutting it and looking like a poodle. If you practice now and go on youtube to figure out how to put your hair in a sock bun or a regular bun it’s super easy. It doesn’t matter how perfect your hair is your drill instructors are still going to say your ugly and your hair isn’t fixed right. I would rather get yelled at to put my hair up quicker than regret cutting my hair. I leave for bootcamp Sept 6, 2011. I know friends who graduated from bootcamp and they told me all about it. 3 mins or less is a good amount of time to put your hair in a bun, so if you don’t want to cut it don’t cut it. Just make sure it’s at a manageable length! OORAH! :)

If your hair is naturally straight then go ahead and cut it off. If your hair is curly or wavey then leave it long. Learn now on how to put your hair up in a sock bun or some type of bun. I have curly and wavey hair. There is no way in hell that I am going to bootcamp in the fall looking like a freaking poodle. A lot of people that are saying to cut it off and it will grow back, yeah thats true but you can only touch your face when your DIs tell you you can. Females that are worried about how their hair is suppose to be put up as long as its put up nice neat and tight it will be fine. Your DIs will play games with you and say your hair is ugly or your ugly. Expect that because that is what they are getting paid to do. So in conclusion if you want to leave your hair long keep it long and learn to put it up. Remember that you can wake up a bit earlier to make sure that your hair is squared away before wake up call. Just make sure that your not disturbing anybody that is around you. If you want you hair short go ahead and cut it short, but when it gets in your face make sure you have permission to move it out of your face. I ship September 6, 2011. Hopefully this was helpful.
