Wow. Okay, on graduation day you might be in shock from what the hell you just went through. But, that doesn’t mean your spark, your sense of humor, and your personality are all gone. Here’s an idea. Go to http://www.youtube.com. Type in a search for "funny Marines" and see what kind of stuff comes up. Marines are some of the funniest people I have encountered. I love being around my husband and his friends when they get together, they know how to take care of business but when it’s time to play, they definitely know how to have a good time.
You do change in boot camp though. You will change from a boy to a man.
Your sister is an I*iot. My husband, like may of his class were ‘saved’ by the military. He loved going in the marines. the fact is, his upbringing (in a west Texas small town) was much harsher than anything boot camp dished out. It was the first time he was happy and around people with similar goals as he had. He loved it. He is decorated and medically retired. He is Proud to have served.
Your there 90 days, not 10 years…
Its not a permanent change..Its a temporary difference once you graduate and it wears down as time goes by..Your just filled with pride and you look at life very different…
I still had my sense of humor and every other characteristic when I graduated, I just didnt show some as often as before..
Yes some do commit suicide when it boot camp…I never heard or saw anyone in my time there, but about 7 recruits tried to escape from there.
I know many Marines and the only change I have seen in them after boot camp is their respectful demeanor. I watched my Godson go from a smart mouth brat to a respectful man.
My friends and relatives are still the fun loving people they were they just respect other people more.
As far as the suicide question I am sure it is not as much of an issue as you think.
The only marines I’ve ever heard of "changing" were in the old days. And I wonder how much of that was just because they were completely unprepared for discipline. I have a LOT of marine friends, and I knew a lot of them before they joined (talked a few of them into it). None of them came back very different.
All military training WILL give you better posture, and people may comment that you "stand proud." It has more to do with standing at attention for long periods of time than anything else. Even that will fade quickly once you’re out of basic for a while.
You’ll hear LOTS of stories of suicides. They are pretty much all bunk. It’s a concern, but I think it’s more of an issue because of people who were very unstable already. Full metal jacket was a cool movie, but that’s it.
Remember, there’s a war on. The training might be a little tougher in terms of preparation, but they’re not going to get rid of perfectly qualified soldiers (or marines) by going overboard. And with modern media, they can’t afford bad publicity from being cruel.
lol I think your girl friend has watched to much full metal jacket. If bootcamp does anything for you it would be a complete postive change into a better person. Everthing about you is still intact, but you just have a different mentality thats all.
