There is no doubt about the fact that the Marines run the most difficult boot camp in America, bar none. What you must realize is that we are not talking about follow on training such as the Navy Seals or the Army Green Beret Training, we are talking about Basic Training. The emphasis is “basic” training because this is where a Marine learns the basic elements of what it takes to become a United States Marine. The Mental Aspect

The mental aspect is the most important factor when discussing survival in Marine Corps Boot Camp. What we are talking about is the mental state, and not the intellect. Although the level of intelligence is one of the aspects we discuss, the mental aspect is more closely related to the emotional aspect, but yet it is different. When we discuss how to prepare for Marine Corps Boot Camp and talk about the mental aspect, there is a direct relationship to how well a person can perform under stress and how well they perform in boot camp.
Stress is created in boot camp and the best way to stop yourself from cracking up is to prepare for what is going to happen while you are in Marine Corps Boot Camp. The reason stress is created in boot camp is because that is what will be experienced in combat and combat is what is what you are really being trained for while in any boot camp. One should NEVER forget that the military has one mission and that is to prepare to advance the needs of America on the modern day battlefield, and there is a great deal of stress on the battlefield. Actually the amount of stress on the battle field is much more than what is experienced in boot camp. When trying to prepare for Marine Corps Boot Camp a person must understand that the most important preparation that can be done is to learn how to deal with stress.
The stress that is inflicted in boot camp is designed to create a pressure that will crack the individual that is not well prepared. The Emotional Aspect
The emotional aspect of boot camp is also stress related but the difference is that this type of stress is born from within. Do you miss your lover? Are you homesick? Do you just hate to exercise? The emotional aspect of preparing for Marine Corps Boot Camp can really be traced back to the mind frame a recruit is experiencing because of the emotions that are internal. What happens here is that a recruit will show some sign of weakness and the Drill Instructors will be on it like a fly on….you know what. Then the instructor will expose that weakness to the platoon and then punish the unit for the problem of the individual. When this happens the recruit is getting it from all ends and that compounds the stress level, which could result in the ultimate failure of the recruit.
The best way for an individual to prepare for Marine Corps Boot Camp is to learn to expect what is ahead on the training calendar. The future recruit should know how long training will last, what events will take place, where will they take place. What are the scores needed? What are the lessons that must be learned and most important is the individual must be prepared to deal with any personal issues that may arise in their life. Will they receive a break up letter? Will “Mommy” try to send cookies? Will the girlfriend send some “porno” style photograph?
If the individual knows in advance what to expect and prepares in advance, they will have a much better chance of keeping their emotions in check, which will keep the stress level manageable. While those assumptions do wonders for the Marine Corps recruitment quotas, they really have very little basis in fact for what it takes to prepare for the physical aspect of Marine Corps Boot Camp.
We will not lie to you and tell you that you do not need to be in shape when you arrive at boot camp. What we will tell you is that the entire training program of Marine Corps Boot Camp is designed to take the weakest person and then give them the needed training to put them in top physical condition. The condition required to become a Marine really should be summed up as being able to have a large amount of stamina or endurance. The ability to be the fastest or the strongest is not required and nor is it expected. What is expected of a recruit is the physical ability to be able to endure what the Drill Instructor inflicts upon the recruit. It really does not matter how much weight you can lift…the instructor can give you so much you can’t lift it again. It does not matter how fast you can run if the instructor tells you it is not fast enough. The physical aspect of preparing for Marine Corps Boot Camp is closely related to the mental and the emotional aspect….much closer than you may realize.
If you are the strongest recruit in history and yet you cannot obey and do what the Drill Instructor tells you to do, you will fail. If a recruit cannot bear the stress of boot camp their strength is not relevant. Granted it is best to be in decent physical shape when you arrive, but the end fact is that only the strong willed can push themselves past the point where THEIR body fails. The training that is experienced in Marine Corps Boot Camp is such that the mind is sharpened to such a point that the emotions are under control and the body just does what the mind tells it to do. The mind is really the boss of the body and the entire program at Parris Island or San Diego is set up to bend the weak emotion-ed and to bend the thought process through mental stress. Those that arrive at boot camp knowing what to expect are the ones that experience the least amount of stress. If the stress can be minimized while at boot camp….the entire process becomes so much easier and so much more achievable.

Marine Corps Boot Camp horror stories are not as common as they used to be, but there are myths out there and there are some true ones that may be blown out of proportion. I would like to take this moment to tell of what some may consider a “horror story”, but I do not and it happened to me.
I was in Marine Corps Boot Camp at Parris Island in 1979. I was the age of 17 and I was in Platoon 1047 and graduated on 14 September 1979. My Senior Drill Instructor was Staff Sergeant Fair and it happened late one evening while I was on fire watch. I had on my chrome dome and my war belt, as they were called and if I remember correctly it was about 0230 hours. It was pouring rain outside and I was the only one awake, or so I thought.

I was goofing off and I was tired and I was bored and I thought it was a waste of time to be up at that time. I recall having my leg up on some sort of ledge and the next thing I remember was being flat on my back with a sheathed bayonet to my throat. Over me stood Staff Sergeant Fair in full face camo looking me in the eyes with the look of a wild-man. In a very hushed tone he asked me “what would have happened if this was combat” I meekly replied that “the Private would be dead.” With the sheathed bayonet still to my throat he leaned closer and whispered in an even more intense “Fuck the Private….your fellow Marines would be dead. They were counting on you to be here to guard them and you let them down. If this was combat, you would be the reason why 71 Marines would have been killed.” He then looked in my eyes with an expression I will never forgot and he said “my brother was killed by the Cong and it is my job to make sure that you don’t graduate from here and be the reason any of those men in there (squadbay) die”. He looked me square in the eyes and said that it better never happen again.
I never doubted what he said, not even for a second.
He was gone in an instant and it was never mentioned again and it was in that moment that I think I became a Marine. It was in that moment that I understood and it was in that moment that the bond of being a Marine was, and will be forever forged in my heart. Some liberal whiner would cry about what happened then and there, but that moment of training carried me on to graduate with honors. The Marine Corps Boot Camp Horror story really was no horror story at all. That was the moment in my life that I became a Marine and for that I offer this Thank You to Senior Drill Instructor Staff Sergeant Fair. I will forever be grateful for that moment of training.

The Crucible is a rite of passage for all Marines and occurs during the very end of Marine Corps Boot Camp. The Crucible is the 54-hour culmination to the transformation of recruit training. It is a physically and mentally challenging event that involves food and sleep deprivation and the completion of various obstacles for the potential Marine to negotiate. This is a relatively new training evolution in the Marine Corps as it did not exist a couple of decades ago. When the evolution of training is completed, the recruits are considered Marines, whereas in years gone by the recruits were not considered Marines until the actual graduation ceremony. All in all, the Crucible has evolved into the culmination of Marine Corps Boot Camp. Below is a brief summary of the events that take place during the scheduled Crucible. 
Basic Facts
Recruits will travel 48 miles on foot during the event.
There are 29 problem-solving exercises during the Crucible.
It consists of 36 different stations.
The recruits will have three meals, ready-to-eat (MREs) during the 54 hours.
The recruits will be required to carry 45 pounds during the Crucible, in addition to 782 gear, uniform and M16 A2 service rifle weight.

After the resupply course, teams negotiate the warrior stations below:

Teams cross two horizontal cable-supported logs.
Pfc Garcia’s Engagement
Individuals demonstrate their knowledge of hand-to-hand combat skills, and then participate in a warrior case study of Pfc. Garcia.
Lehew’s Challenge
Teams of two climb over an eight-foot high horizontal log.
Corbin’s Convoy
Teams react to a simulated IED while on patrol.
Event 2– Battle of Belleau Wood: Pugil Sticks/Body Sparring
Leadership Reaction Course
A three-hour event in which the teams perform six reaction course problems which test their ability to work as a team to solve problems.
Some of the problems include:
Using three wooden boards to cross a number of stumps without touching the ground.
Negotiating a water hole using the same wooden board concept to get from point A to point B.
Transporting a large container over a wall using the limited resources available.
Once completing the events, the teams of two face off in a pugil stick bout.

Event 3 – Core Event and Warrior Stations
A one-hour event which can hold a maximum of six teams working concurrently.
Noonan’s Casualty Evacuation
The team will recover a downed pilot and another recruit “shot” by a sniper and transport them over a mile of wooded terrain.
Enhanced Obstacle Course
the recruits carry a dummy casualty on a stretcher and ammunition cans from one end of a standard Marine Corps obstacle course to the other, going over all obstacles.
Marine Corps Martial Arts Program (MCMAP) Strikes Station -
Recruits are required to demonstrate and conduct five-minute MCMAP strikes.
Core Values Station
Recruits sit inside a hut and receive information on a particular core value from their drill instructor.
Night Event (8 pm – 11 pm) – Five-mile night hike with a time limit of three hours.
Sleep (midnight – 4 am)
Day 2
Reveille (4 am)
Events 4-6 (5:30 am – 6:30 pm)
Event 4 –Battle of Fallujah
A one-hour event in which teams resupply water, ammunition and MREs through the Combat Assault Course.
Following the completion of the Battle of Fallujah, recruits negotiate a bayonet assault course and the warrior stations below:
Perez’s Passage
Teams cross a “contaminated area” by swinging on ropes from “safe spot” to “safe spot.”
Kraft’s Struggle
Teams climb a 10-foot wall and climb down the opposite side by a knotted rope.
John Quick Trail (Navigation Station)
Basic map reading and grid coordinate plotting will be reviewed and evaluated.
Core Values Station
Recruits sit inside a hut and receive information on a particular core value from their drill instructor.
Event 5 – Battle of Mariana Islands
Combat Endurance Course
Teams have two hours to complete five events of a modified Confidence Course.
The Sky Scraper
The team retrieves a “wounded” dummy from the top of an 18-foot tower.
Stairway to Heaven
Team members move two ammunition cans over the top of a 36-foot ladder obstacle.
Two-Line Bridge
Team members cross two 52-foot long ropes with their hands and feet suspended two feet and 10 feet off the ground as they carry ammunition cans and water re-supply cans.
The Weaver
Team members climb over and under 24 logs, 42 feet in length ascending to 14 feet as they carry ammunition and water re-supply cans.
In addition to the Enhanced Confidence Course, teams go through a Combat Endurance Course.
Combat Endurance Course- Teams conduct a simulated patrol, negotiate the obstacles and report the number and types of obstacles to intelligence sources.
Event 6– Battle of Khe Sanh (Unknown Distance Firing)
Teams of four fire two magazines of five rounds each from simulated building structures at unknown distance targets in a time limit of 70 seconds. The number of targets hit and number of unused ammunition is then recorded.
Following Day’s Defense, team members participate in a 250-meter casualty evacuation where members remove simulated casualties from a simulated danger area consisting of artillery simulators.
Night Event (8 pm – 11 pm)- Night Infiltration Course
Teams re-supply water, ammunition and MREs at night in a simulated combat environment. The teams take their ammunition cans, water cans and simulated MREs through the Combat Assault Course with the added obstacle of darkness.
Sleep (midnight – 4 am)
Day 3
Reveille (3 am)
Nine-mile hike (4 am – 7 am)
Recruits conduct a nine-mile hike from the Crucible site back to the battalion.
Eagle Globe and Anchor Ceremony (7:30-8:00)
New Marines will receive an Eagle Globe and Anchor from their Drill Instructor marking their transition from a recruit to a Marine.
Warrior’s Breakfast
The new Marines are treated to a breakfast fit for only true warriors. It consists of all-you-can-eat steak, eggs and potatoes.

Injury: There are times when a recruit falls off a rope or twists a knee and becomes hurt to such a degree that they cannot continue on with Marine Corps Boot Camp. When this happens the recruit is stashed away in some platoon waiting to heal. This is a very frustrating time because the recruit has realized the dream to become a Marine is dead and yet they cannot return home. The reason the recruit cannot return home is two-fold. First off, the recruit needs to heal, but more important to the Corps is they do not want to send home recruits that look beat up and /or abused. It does not make good public relations. This is a reason why people flunk Marine Corps Boot Camp.
Criminal: There are times when a civilian slips into boot camp and starts training like everyone else. Then one-day while the platoon is sitting quietly in the squadbay, two men in suits walk in and take a recruit with them, and that recruit is never heard from again by the their fellow recruits. The reason for this is because they had some outstanding warrant on them or some such criminal charge that did not get caught on the initial processing. Once a recruit actually enters active military duty, their is another, deeper background check performed. This follow on background check sometimes turns up a recruit that has not been so honest. This is yet another reason why some people flunk Marine Corps Boot Camp.
Drugs: This reason has been given its own section because it is very common. A very popular reason why recruits get sent home is because they smoked pot or did some other drug right before they reported into boot camp. One of the first things a new recruit does when they get off the bus at a Marine Corps Recruit Depot is they take a “piss test“, which the rest of the world refers to as a urine analysis drug test. A new recruit will pee in the bottle and off goes the sample for testing. It takes a few days/weeks to get the results, so somewhere along the line the recruit gets pulled away from the rest of the platoon.
Too Fat: Yes, we said it Too FAT. This reason actually falls under an umbrella of reasons why people flunk out of Marine Corps Boot Camp. The actual reason may because the recruit cannot keep up with the physical training. Maybe the fat brought on some other health issues that warranted the expulsion from Marine Corps Boot Camp. The end result of being obese will start with the Drill Instructors giving the recruit more attention than they will want. This negative attention will bleed over to the fellow recruits getting angry with the fat one because the platoon will be punished since the fat one cannot keep up. If a recruit is too fat they will become the focal point of everything the Drill Instructors can throw at the recruit. If you think that this is rude or not “politically correct” you would be right if your were in the civilian world. In the glow of Marine Corps Boot Camp, your feelings mean nothing. If you are fat and can’t get over the wall, you are a liability. if you are fat and can’t keep up with the platoon, you will need to go to the “pork chop platoon” for further and additional training, or go home. It is that simple If you are too fat in Marine Corps Boot Camp the deciding factor will be if the individual has the internal drive and motivation to keep up with the rest of the unit. Being fat is not a automatic get sent home, it is just an issue that will require additional intestinal fortitude to overcome.

Lack of Personal Drive: If a civilian shows up and is really not committed to becoming a Marine, there is a very good chance they will fail. The commitment to becoming a Marine will need to transcend personal discomfort and personal needs. A recruit that does not have the internal drive to continue and carry on will falter along the way and fall behind in training. This is when the gray area becomes apparent because the lack of personal drive will allow, for example, a minor medical injury to become a chance to be sent home. When a recruit has a lack of will to carry on through the most difficult time in their life, it becomes easy to roll “the reason” into another reason that will offer them the opportunity to quit. A recruit that does not have the internal and ongoing will to graduate Marine Corps Boot Camp, will allow a non-essential cause for failure to blossom and grow into a reason that can become tangible enough for dismissal. The possible list of reasons in this category are virtually limitless, but they are there for the weak recruit to take a hold of, and then use that excuse for the rest of their life. The excuse that manifests itself for dismissal from Marine Corps Boot Camp will be retold to family and friends over and over so many times, that after a while the failed recruit starts to believe the reason really was substantial enough to warrant leaving boot camp a failure. Lack of personal drive is one reason that people flunk out of Marine Corps Boot Camp that starts while still at home waiting as a “poolee” to start boot camp.
Lack of Preparation Academically: Preparation for Marine Corps Boot Camp is one thing that an individual can never get enough of,…and whatever they do to prepare,… will leave them ill-prepared for Marine Corps Boot Camp. To flunk out of Marine Corps Boot Camp a recruit really has to flunk out because the individual recruit is offered time and time again an opportunity to succeed. If a test subject is causing trouble the recruit would have to be a rock to not be able to pass it eventually. The academic portion of Marine Corps Boot Camp is not the reason for many recruits being sent home from boot camp. What causes the trouble is that the academic portion of boot camp is really just another faucet of stress that must be overcome to graduate. If a civilian does not study before they arrive at the recruit depot to start basic recruit training, then the amount of stress will increase overall, compared to the civilian that studied before arriving at boot camp. The point you need to understand is that the academic studies, in them-self, are not difficult. It is only when the academics are thrown at you with the rest that is going on, that makes it difficult. If a civilian studied all of the subject matter prior to becoming a recruit, the level of stress would be reduced exponentially. The lack of preparation academically only leads to increased stress, that some individuals just cannot handle, and that is just another reason why they flunk out of Marine Corps Boot Camp.
Easily Intimidated: The Marine Corps really does not want some mindless drone running around looking to start a fight, but they do not want a person that can be intimidated too easily. If a civilian shows up to recruit training and takes the training and the treatment they receive too harshly, they will end up being intimidated and they will flunk out and fail Marine Corps Boot Camp. A recruit needs to be able to stand up and stand tall to the constant barrage of verbal abuse they receive while at boot camp. Anything less will cause the recruit to fail boot camp and be sent home as a civilian. The recruit cannot take the treatment at boot camp as a personal issue. If the Drill Instructor sense a weakness, they will work at using it to intimidate you right back to the civilian world.
If you want to become a Marine, you have to make it through Marine Corps Boot Camp. If you are not prepared for what that means, you will have a tougher time than you need to have. Marine Corps Boot Camp is not some unbeatable experience, as demonstrated by the graduation ceremonies that take place weekly. If you are going off to boot camp, then you have made the commitment and that commitment will only have one of two outcomes. You will either become a Marine or you will fail. PERIOD!!!! You will spend every minute of everyday in Marine Corps Boot Camp dealing with the issue of becoming a basically trained Marine. Either you prepare now or you don’t. If you choose to not prepare now you may still graduate, but your time in Marine Corps Boot Camp will suck much more than it has to.
Lack of Preparation Physically: It is not by accident that the reason for not being physically prepared for boot camp was listed last. Most outsiders will disagree with this, but the truth is that The Marine Corps Boot Camp process is not designed to kick out and fail the weak from becoming a Marine. One of the first things a recruit has to do when they arrive at Marine Corps Basic Training is what is called the Initial Physical Fitness Test (PFT). If you arrived at boot camp, chances are you will be able to make the minimum requirements to start and continue boot camp with your platoon. If you have the ability to qualify at the initial PFT, you have the physical ability to graduate. The entire Marine Corps Boot Camp system is designed to take ANY civilian and work them hard and push them physically so they will be able to march on the grinder (parade deck) and graduate as basically trained Marines. It would be silly to think that the entire system would be set up to “hire” civilians and then not have a system in place to promote being physically fit. Once again, preparation is key, because if an individual shows up for Marine Corps Boot Camp and has a good physical condition, their stress level will be lower, and they will be able to not “freak out” when the entire world around them seems to be crashing down around their ears. The point of being fit beforehand will only lower the overall level of stress that the recruit will have to endure. Before you get done reading this…LISTEN UP!!!!!! Being out of shape does not mean you will fail Marine Corps Boot Camp just as much as being in shape DOES NOT guarantee you will graduate a Marine. It all comes back down to personal drive, will power and overall commitment.

One thing a person must understand is that the United States Marine Corps is a fighting force. If you are afraid of getting a bloody nose, do not worry because you are not alone. It is a normal feeling to be afraid of what The United States Marine Corps has to offer. If you think the word fear is too strong, then maybe a better word would be to “respect” what Marine Corps Boot Camp has to offer. Granted, on the outset it needs to be acknowledged that everyone joins the Corps for different reasons. Some join because they seek discipline while others enter because they need a roof over their head. Many seek employment and yet a few may even be seeking closure of some past emotional wound that they feel the Marine Corps will be able to help heal. The fact that is not mentioned very often about Marine Corps Boot Camp is that the major portion of recruits that fail is not because the can’t run fast enough or do enough pull-ups. The fact of the matter is that most of the recruits that fail, or “wash out” of Marine Corps Boot Camp is because of the stress that is induced upon them. Granted that a large portion of that stress is related to the physical fitness that is performed, but the total package of Marine Corps Boot Camp is designed to take the weakest of the weak and build their muscles up over the 13 weeks they are in recruit training. If a civilian reports in for Marine Corps Boot Camp and they are in poor shape, they will be exercised daily, and the Drill Instructors will work them to their maximum. If a civilian reports in for Marine Corps Boot Camp and they are in fantastic shape, they will be exercised daily, and the Drill Instructors will work them to their maximum. The key to the entire concept is that the Drill Instructors are there to induce mental stress over all of the recruits. Marine Corps Boot Camp is designed around stress, not around physical abilities because the entire process is designed to stress the individual, while teaching them to become a Marine.
Too many Marine poolee’s (those waiting to ship out to boot camp) tend to focus all of their efforts on the physical aspect of preparing for Marine Corps Boot Camp. We are not saying the physical aspect of boot camp is not important, we are saying that the mental aspect is MORE important. If you were to be the strongest Marine Recruit in the history of the world and could not handle the mental stress, you would become the strongest Marine Recruit in the history of the world to be sent home as just another Marine Corps Boot Camp wash out. You need to understandthat you have to know and study what the recruit training environment will be like mentally. You need to study the classroom training material in the quietness of civilian life before you step off the bus at Marine Corps Boot Camp. By having been exposed to the book knowledge ahead of time you will keep the stress level down lower than those that have not prepared intellectually, as well as emotionally.
In Marine Corps Boot Camp you will need to know the classroom materials such as rank structure, general orders, first aid to name but a few. When you combine all of the classroom materials with the physical fitness portions there is a level of stress that builds up, which is what creates the pressure in the recruits life. That pressure, which is stress induced, is what is at the root cause of the break down of recruits, in general. As you prepare for Marine Corps Boot Camp, you need to prepare for more than just sit-up, pull-ups and running. Not preparing for the mental aspect is the one challenge that is the root cause of failure that runs statistically deep in those that are sent home as civilians.
As you prepare for your time in Marine Corps Boot Camp, it is stressed to you that you must prepare for the mental challenge as hard as you prepare for the physical challenge. You must realize that the body will go nowhere that the mind is not willing to go. If you doubt this then you have not been running enough to get ready for Marine Corps Boot Camp. Once your mind is convinced about how it can, or cannot do something the body will follow like a whipped puppy. Your Drill Instructors are trained to enforce and perpete stress on you for 13 weeks. So there you sit, you went and did it…you signed the paperwork and have agreed to give the United States Marine Corps a shot. You have decided that you are going to make a go and you have thus far summoned up the courage to stand on those little yellow footprints at Marine Corps Boot Camp. You signed the paperwork and now you have some date on the calendar that is the date you THINK is when you are going to report into either Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD) Parris Island or San Diego. That date you have in your head (brain housing group) is there and now you are what is referred to as a poolee.

The term “poolee” really does not have much respect behind it and if you look and listen to the word, it does not even command the respect the word “recruit” commands. In fact, the term almost sounds…well, kind of wimpy. Oh but we have strayed from the intention of this little article and that intention is to make you aware that the date you think you will be going away to Drill Instructor land, really is a very flexible date. As a poolee, you need to be flexible and very motivated.
By the time you enter the phase of Marine Corps Poolee you know your recruiters and you know those that are in the local recruiting station. You have seen many young adults head off to boot camp and you have even seen some return. It is more than like a few you saw head off, never heard from again and are now just civilians again, because they failed to become a United States Marine. They went from civilian to poolee to recruit to civilian, and never earned the title of Marine.
If you want to make it in the Corps, you know you have boot camp ahead and that is the dividing line you must cross. I will even bet your recruiter has shared some stories with you about their experiences and exploits and you are thrilled to hear them. Let me be the first to tell you that the best stories are the ones they can’t tell you. So, as long as you are a Marine poolee, you are not in the club yet. I use the word club lightly.
What you need to do is plan to be a Marine poolee for half the time you expect. The reason is because there is a great chance that you will be called to ship out boot camp earlier than the date you were told. You need to prepare as if you have very little time left, no matter how much time you THINK you may have. The date you have is very fluid and when your recruiter calls you and asks if you are ready to move that date up, will you be ready to answer the call?
Your recruiter will put you through your physical workouts every now and then and he /she will more or less be very respectful in how you are evaluated, for the most part. There may even be one point that you are exposed to “real Drill Instructors” that come out and scream and yell and do all what you would consider the cray stuff. Although the Recruiter has done their very best, this is the portion that is lacking in the preparation for Marine Corps Boot Camp. This is really not the fault of the recruiter, this is the point where YOU, the poolee need to take over.

What you will soon learn is that you cannot pass Marine Corps Boot Camp on your own schedule. You will either be committed to making it a rock solid goal, or you won’t. If you are gung ho and determined to become the best damn Marine that exists, then you need to train like you mean it, while in poolee status. You need to run, jump and do sittups and pull ups and then run some more. You need to do that each and everyday, but not to impress the recruiter, but to impress yourself.
The sad part of boot camp is that most wash outs from Marine Corps Bot Camp are not from the physical portion, it is because of the mental, or the emotional portion that the recruit can’t tolerate. If you want to become a Marine you have to realize that it is the mind games that cause you to fail. Have your recruiters talked to you about those mind games? Are you aware of the tricks that are used? Do you know how they cause the stress to pile up? Did you learn how to bend under extreme pressure and not break? The transition from poole to Marine is one that will take much more than a calendar date.
If you really want to be a Marine, then you need to train hard and ignore the date you were given. Train like you are leaving next week, every week. While you are training how to run faster you also need to understand the training process that you will be subjected to while at the MCRD. By understanding the mind games and the stress inducers, your chance of navigating your way from poolee to Marine will increase greatly. If you want to be a Marine, it will take much more than just a strong body, it will also take a mind that can handle the stress of boot camp, because war is so much more stressful. If you can’t survive boot camp, no drill instructor will want to send you to the fleet and one day have to fight an enemy side by side with you.
Train hard. Train your body. Train your mind. Train like you have half the time. Train. Train. Train. You can either prepare for it now, of suffer the wrath of not being prepared while at boot camp.

So, you signed the paperwork and are getting ready to ship off to Marine Corps Boot Camp? Maybe you are going to MCRD Parris Island, or maybe it will be MCRD San Diego? It really does not matter because when your little feet end up standing on those little yellow footprints, you will be really close to meeting a Marine just like the ones you see above. What you see in the photograph above are Drill Instructors.
The relationship with your Drill Instructor will be unlike any relationship you have ever had and unlike any relationship you will ever have. A Drill Instructor is the Marine that will mold you from a civilian and transform you into a Marine. The Drill Instructor is the icon that right now has no personal face, but a day after you begin boot camp, that face will be forever etched into your memory. No matter how many years pass in your life, the face of your Drill Instructor will be a timeless fixation in your mind’s eye.
The bond between a recruit and a Drill Instructor is one that is very difficult to explain to a civilian. That bond is one that is forged through the sweat and effort of trying to graduate from Marine Corps recruit training. The role of the Drill Instructor is one that ultimately is the guardian to the gate of entry for those requesting to join the ranks of all the Marines that have come before. A person must remember that to a Marine, this is the most sacred and hallowed ground. Grounds that were tread by the likes of those that are nameless to the public, civilian population today. The job of the Drill Instructor is to ensure that the new recruits are worthy to wear the same insignia that Marines like John Basilone (Manila John), Oscar P. Horton or Eugene A. Oberegon earned. A United States Marine Corps Drill Instructor is the one to enforce the ultra high standards of entry of The Marine Corps.
When you first step off the bus at a recruit depot and are “asked” to stand on the yellow footprints, you are greeted by a Drill Instructor, but those are not the ones that will push you through the training cycles. These Marines are the ones that work in Receiving Battalion and get all of the civilians processed to be accepted by the actual Drill Instructors that will complete the training. The receiving portion of a recruit’s time at a recruit depot will depend on how many have come before they arrived. Once the needed number of recruits arrive and are processed in a battalion, they are handed off to the actual Drill instructors responsible for the day to day training schedule. That is when the real training, the hard core training begins.
My first memory of boot camp, after the officers handed my platoon over to the Drill Instructors, was the entire platoon standing at full attention for about three hours. The Drill Instructors walked up and down, back and forth and pounced on any recruit that moved or looked anywhere but straight ahead. It was like going from zero to recruit in seconds. The impact of not being able to even move my eyes without permission, was a major change in personal reality.

The interesting thing about the relationship that is forged between recruit and Drill Instructor is that despite all of the emotions that bubble to the surface, hatred is never present for those that earn the priviledge of wearing the Marine uniform as a warrior. Despite the hours, days and months of the constant screaming and stress, when you meet your Drill Instructor later on in the FMF, (Fleet Marine Force) you only want to shake their hand and buy them a drink. Once you have graduated and earned the title of united States Marine, your respect for what that Drill Instructor accomplished has made you nothing but grateful.
There is a certain technique that all Drill Instructors use to stress out the recruits. The techniques and training strategy used is not some random idea that each Instructor individually devises. The way things are done in Marine Boot Camp are what has been learned down through the years. The art of recruit training is one that has been handed down through the decades and that art has been taught to the Drill Instructors. Somewhere along the way that “art” is absorbed by the recruits when they learn the meaning of Honor, tradition and Semper Fi. Somewhere along the way that raw civilian is transformed from a civilian puke into a Marine that is ready and willing to move onto further training. The specialized training that follows boot camp only happens after you get past your Drill Instructor.
Marines do not fight and die merely for their country, they also do it for the Marine that stands next to them. They bleed for the Marine that is over the next ridge. The Marine pilot flies into danger because that is a Marine calling for help. The Marine cook has the ability to pick up a weapon and is trained enough to shoot straight, because the enemy is near and all Marines are warriors. The Marine that is nearby could have been trained in any job, but first and foremost they have been trained as a Marine, and that training was accomplished in Marine Corps basic training. That basic recruit training was accomplished and completed and guided by none-other than a Drill Instructor.
Do not expect your Drill Instructor to be your friend. Do not expect your Drill Instructor to be your enemy. Do not expect your Drill Instructor to be anything but the guardian to the gate of The United States Marine Corps. They are more than willing to help you become and earn the title of Marine, but they are even more than willing to send you home packing as a failure. Expect nothing more from your Drill Instructor other than someone placed in your path to ensure that if you enter the FMF, that you earned the right and privilege to be there.
