I mean if you don’t pass. How is it your fault?? Even if you tried.

These are actually really good videos about rappelling training in Marine Corps boot camp. OOH RAH!

The Marine Corps Martial Arts Program is designed to help a Marine survive close combat on the battle field.

If you are looking to locate Marine recruits from years gone by we have created this page to help reunite marine recruits that have graduated from Unites States Marine Corps basic training.  Whether or not you graduated from Parris Island or San Diego…we hope to provide a path for anyone interested looking for those they have lost contact with over the years.  This page is the start of what I hope will grow over the years into a terminal on the Internet that will help those seeking to reunite with fellow marine recruits for private reasons or those that may be planning some sort of reunion.

There is often a comparison as to whether Marine Corps Boot Camp is harder than Marine Corps OCS.  There really is not an easy way to compare them because they both have a different types of training.  Since I have completed both Parris Island and O.C.S., in Quantico, Virginia, I feel as if I am qualified to provide an answer.  I did spend 13 weeks at Parris Island before I went on to receive my commission as a 2nd Lieutenant  through The P.L.C. Program, which is a path that can be included in O.C.S.  I have always said that at Marine Corps enlisted boot camp a recruit is told to jump and the recruit is trained to simply jump, while at O.C.S. a candidate is trained to ask “how high they need to jump?”  The difference may seem very subtle, but the difference is actually significant.

What I will say is that I had an advantage in O.C.S. because I already knew the basics of The United States Marine Corps.  While I was there I felt as if I had much more respect from the instructors than the other candidates, and that alone made a big difference.  I will say that the physical portion of O.C.S. was more difficult than I experienced at Parris Island.

Looking back on the two types of training the Marine Corps has to offer I will say that despite Parris Island being many more years ago than O.C.S., I have much more vivid memories of Parris Island than I have of Quantico.  I can remember Parris Island in great detail and yet O.C.S. is mostly forgotten.  I remember names of fellow recruits at Parris Island and I do not remember ANY fellow candidates from O.C.S.  I remember the dates and time I graduated from Parris Island and I can’t even remember the year I graduated from O.C.S.

I cherish my memories from Parris Island as an event that happened and I have forgotten O.C.S. almost completely.  Call it what you will, but that is the truth.  Is Marine Corps Basic training more difficult than Marine Corps Officer Training?

I think the answer will really depend on how well an individual prepares for the cycle of training.  O.C.S. was simple for me because I was so well prepared for the training because of my time at Parris Island.  I did not have to stress out about the little things.  I already had the basic knowledge down cold.  I knew the basics of everything, while all the other candidates were stressing out to memorize what the ranks insignia looked like…I knew it.  While other’s were stressing out they found it hard to memorize information that would normally be simple to memorize.  I do remember O.C.S. being one big hassle, while Parris Island was one big event.

If you are here seeking information on whether Marine Officer Training is harder than Marine Enlisted Training, I will tell you that if you have done neither, the first one you do will be the most difficult thing you will have ever done.  I will tell you that O.C.S. was easy, but I was as prepared as anyone could ever be prepared.  I was in good shape and I had ALL the knowledge down cold.  I was prepared and that is the stark reality that made it seem easier for me.  If you are looking to begin Marine Corps Basic Training….be ready.  Learn all you can.  Sure you should be in shape…but that is not what I refer to as preparation.  The physical stuff is easy because the training builds you up.  The hard part is the knowledge and the mind games instructors play with you.  Even though the course materials are not difficult to learn….it is difficult to learn (memorize) while under the stress of the instructors.

My suggestion to you is stop thinking Marine training is just physical and understand the mental aspect is what causes so many failures.  Running fast and being stong is not as important as endurance and to endure boot camp you need to be ready.  Being ready means being prepared and that is the complete package.  understand the mind games and have all of the lessons down cold before you get there. Being ready is what will help you succeed and success is the only thing that will matter whether you are an officer or enlisted.  It all comes down to the preparation and the inner fortitude.  You think you have the fortitude…but do you have the knowledge?

A group of us took at tour of Parris Island, SC where they make Marines. It was organized for depot spouses and authorized patrons only. I am one of the lucky retired Marines that got to go on it. It was a very interesting tour which took us to the famous “Yellow Footprints, Receiving Barracks, a recruit squad bay, confidence course, The Crucible, and the chow hall for lunch. It was a great time and very informative. I have 14 videos of it to post. I hope you enjoy them.

Where it all begins
