Someone I know was stupid and got an owi (operating while intoxicated), and I was wondering if this jeapordized his chance of getting in the Marines. He is a recruit, he’s signed papers, he’s passed the asvab (barely), but he hasn’t taken the physical yet.

Also, if he can’t get into the Marines, can he try the Army?

  • Mr Puma:

Applicants may not enlist as an alternative to criminal prosecution, indictment, incarceration, parole, probation, or other punitive sentence. They are ineligible for enlistment until the original assigned sentence would have been completed.
In other words, he can’t be sworn in until the Judge says so.

  • Merchant of Death:

He better report this incident to his recruiter and find out NOW because if he ever needs clearance (which he will due to the wars) they’ll discover this and he’s kicked out for sure. Usually one non felony violation is no problem.

  • LCPL USMC:

He should be able to get in. Make sure he lets his recruiter know.

He’ll probably have a hard time getting any security clearances for any higher sensitivity jobs while in.

  • Trouble:

He is not a recruit yet.

Did this happen after his MEPS visit?

If so, I would try to talk with the Arresting Officer and see if you can plead with him, explain the situation. May work or not.

If that does not work, you need to tell the recruiter either way.

You will need a waiver for this and they are not taking anyone with waivers at this time

No Military Service is taking waivers at his time. Especially since he just barely passed is ASVAB

Jeg, no matter what happens, it’s important that you disclose this information about your, um, your "friend’s" OWI. If you don’t disclose, and they find out later, it will not reflect well on you, or your friend.

  • Mrsjvb:

he’s done. one he cannot ship while he has pending legal issues.

and two by getting in trouble while in DEP he violated his contract. ( to not change his status in any way while in DEP)

  • I would ask a recruiter asap. It is better to be safe then sorry down the road.
